Barnsley maintained their 100% record in pre-season and under new head coach Daniel Stendel with a thumping 7-1 victory at National League North side York City.
Once again Stendel opted to field two different sides for each half and his first half line-up started off sluggishly allowing their non-league hosts to open the scoring when Barnsley born Jon Parkin who started his career at Oakwell before leaving in 2002 chipped in the ball from inside the area to Jake Wright who seemed to just chest it past Jack Walton from barely six yards out after 20 minutes.
Barnsley though changed the game around in the space of five minutes by scoring three goals. First Kieffer Moore showed good strength to collect a throw in under pressure from a York defender and swivelled to shoot which York keeper Adam Bartlett could only parry into the path of Tom Bradshaw who grabbed his third goal in two games this summer with a simple finish.
Four minutes later the Reds were ahead through a superbly worked goal. Brad Potts released Bradshaw to run away from the York defence and then arrived in the box to collect a return ball and volley it past Bartlett. Within a minute it was three when a chip from Ryan Hedges caught out Bartlett meaning the keeper could only knock it into the path of Moore who easily finished.
Stendel made ten changes at the break with only goalkeeper Walton returning but unlike at Gasinborough where this seemed to stunt the Reds, here at Bootham Crescent they picked up from where their team-mates had left off, adding a fourth just 14 minutes in when George Moncur released youngster Victor Adeboyejo on the right hand side of the area, he bamboozled the York defenders with some trickery before rifling it past the keeper at his near post.
It became five on 73 minutes when George Moncur sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot after Hamaza Bencherrif handled Mamadou Thiam's corner. Thiam himself got in the act five minutes later - meaning all four of Barnsley's recognised strikers scored - when a lovely ball from Moncur released him and the Senegalese flicked the ball behind himself with his right foot before curling a beauty with his left in the bottom corner.
The scoring was finally ended with a super seventh after 81 minutes. Lovely one touch passing around the edge of the York penalty area ended with Jared Bird flicking the ball behind for the on rushing Dylan Mottley-Henry to slot home.
Barnsley will attempt to make it a hattrick of victories when they travel to face Salford City on Saturday at 3pm.
