A last gasp 96th minute goal from substitute Josh Alderson preserved the Under 18’s unbeaten start to the FA Premier Academy League season.
Barnsley had been trailing since half time but in the very dying embers of the match Alderson stabbed home from a huge throw from Jake Scott.
Apart from this, all the goal action took place during the first 45 minutes. Liverpool took the lead after 16 minutes when Sumner struck a beauty into the top corner from 20 yards. Jordan Clark bettered it though just five minutes later when he fired home from 25 yards to draw The Reds level.
But Liverpool grabbed the lead back right on half time when Petersen headed home.
That looked like it was going to be the difference between the two sides until Alderson struck with the last kick of the game.
Reds: Lidakevicius, Scott, Stones, Kilburn, Steade, Turner, Digby, Clark, Abbott (Alderson 73), Patterson (McLeod 61), Rose (Oates 61).
Subs: Martin, Moyo.
The Academy’s next match is at home to Nottingham Forest next Saturday morning at 11am. The young Forest side were still without a win before they hosted Manchester City this morning.
