Strong rumours persist that Barnsley could make a move for Crystal Palace veteran Shaun Derry to add more “bite” to their midfield in the January transfer window.
The 32 year old who has had spells at Sheffield United, Portsmouth, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Leeds is free to leave Selhurst Park in the New Year, as financial problems at Palace means every player is up for sale.
Derry does not have a grand reputation at Oakwell however, after goading Reds fans during the 3-2 win over Leeds back in 2006.
Meanwhile an ex Red was in Champions League action last night. 24 year old goal-keeper Ross Turnbull who made 27 appearances for The Reds in two loan spells in 2004 started for Chelsea in their 2-2 draw with APOEL Nicosia. It was Turnbull’s first start for the Blues. There was no happy ending for one man still at Barnsley. Young midfielder Simon Heslop- currently on loan at Kettering- played the full 90 minutes for the Poppies in their 5-1 FA Cup Second Round Replay defeat at Leeds last night. The result means it will be Leeds, and not Kettering who will enjoy a lucrative Third Round trip to Manchester United.
