It had to be them didn’t it? On the same day that Mason Holgate made a reported £2m move from Oakwell to Goodison Park, he and John Stones found out they will be returning to South Yorkshire this month after the two sides were drawn together in the second round of the Capital One Cup.
In a rather bizarre draw on SKY Sports last night, the remaining League One and Two teams in the competition were pre-drawn with the only “balls in the bag” being the seeded Premier League and Championship sides.
This meant before the draw Reds supporters knew they would have a home tie to look forward to and it was almost fate to see Everton drawn to face them, coming on the same day that 18 year old Holgate finally ended a summer saga and moved to the Premier League.
Probably due to all the back story with these two sides, SKY confirmed this afternoon that the game will be shown live by them, on Wednesday 26th August with a 7:45pm kick off.
This will be the first meeting between Barnsley and Everton since The Reds one and only Premier League campaign. They drew 2-2 at Oakwell that season but have lost three of the last four home meetings with the Toffees and have failed to win any of the last seven clashes home or away.
