Another Five Star Hammering For Beleaguered Barnsley

Last updated : 29 August 2013 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley conceded five goals in successive matches for only the second time in the club’s history.

On the only other occasion the players could claim the mitigating circumstances of having to play twice in two days. On Christmas Day 1903, The Reds were defeated 5-1 at Bolton, and then the following day, on Boxing Day, crashed 5-1 at Grimsby. Also in 1965, Barnsley lost 5-1 at home to Doncaster and 7-2 at Bradford Park Avenue in successive league games but these two matches were separated by a month due to the FA Cup.

This was Barnsley’s second heaviest defeat in the League Cup, with the heaviest coming at Manchester City in 2004 when they were thumped 7-1. It is however their heaviest League Cup defeat ever at Oakwell.

Mike Pollitt made Barnsley Football Club history by becoming their oldest ever player.

At 41 years and 180 days old, he broke a 91-year-old record set by fellow goalkeeper Tommy Thorpe who was 40 years and 310 days old when he made his final Reds appearance way back in 1922.

Its one win in 13 now for a Barnsley side who remain win-less in 2013-2014 and they have now only progressed past the Second Round of the League Cup once in the last 12 seasons.

As mentioned above they have failed to win any of their six games in 2013-2014, their worst run for 21 years.

The Reds have conceded 17 goals in their six matches this season, an average of 2.8 per game.

To try and end on some positives, the attendance at Oakwell last night, of 6,574 was the highest for a home League Cup tie since mighty Manchester United’s visit back in 2009.

After failing to score in any of their first three games of the season Barnsley have now netted in each of the last three and six of the last 10.
