Barnsley have now been knocked out of the FA Cup by a lower league team for the third time in four seasons.
After elimination by Northampton in the League Cup back in August, this is only the SECOND time ever that Barnsley have been knocked out of both the League Cup and FA Cup by a lower league side in the same season. The only previous occasion was in 1961-1962 in only the second ever season of the League Cup. Back then third tier Barnsley were eliminated from that competition by Southport and the FA Cup by Carlisle who were both Fourth Division outfits.
Ironically this season’s eliminations have both come at home, and both by a 2-1 scoreline after extra time.
Barnsley have now lost each of their last three matches that have gone to extra time. It is six matches since they last won a game in extra time- 4-3 at Rochdale in 2012-2013.
Barnsley have won only one of their past seven cup games at Oakwell (FA Cup, League Cup, Football League Trophy)
Barnsley have failed to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup since 2012-2013.
This was the sixth time Barnsley and Blackpool have met in the FA Cup, and Blackpool have now progressed on four occasions.
