Barnsley have lost their first league game and then drawn in the cup for the third successive season.
They have failed to win any of their first two competitive matches of a season for the fourth successive season.
The Reds have failed to win in 90 minutes in any of their past NINE League Cup ties. Their last victory without the need for penalties or extra time was a 2-1 success at Reading in 2009.
Barnsley have also failed to win any of their past seven home League Cup ties in 90 minutes.
Barnsley had led at half time in five of their past six matches. They are unbeaten at the break in all of those six. The last player to give an opposition team a half time lead against Barnsley, now plays for The Reds- George Moncur for Colchester.
Six of the last seven goals Barnsley have conceded have come in the second half.
This is not the first time Adam Davies has scored an own goal in a cup competition, he gifted the opening goal to Fleetwood in the Johnstones’ Paint Trophy last season.
For the second successive season Josh Scowen gave The Reds the lead in the first round of the League Cup and the match finished 1-1.
Barnsley had an astonishing THIRTY shots on goal last night- they had 21 in this competition in an extra defeat to Everton last season.
Barnsley lost a game after leading at half time for the first time since October 2015. That was in a 2-1 defeat at Southend and Scowen also gave The Reds the lead that day.
This game continued Barnsley’s wretched run against Northampton. Last night was their first meeting for 12 years but the Cobblers have come out on top in each of the last four and have lost only one of the last nine against The Reds.
Barnsley were unbeaten in five cup matches before last night (all Football League Trophy). Their previous cup defeat was 1-0 at Altrincham in the FA Cup in November.
