Barnsley 3-2 Oxford United

Last updated : 06 April 2016 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)
For the first time in 104 years Barnsley secured themselves a cup win by bringing home the Johnstones’ Paint Trophy from Wembley.

Although The Reds also won the County Cup in 1993, only Barnsley and Doncaster entered so it was not deemed a recognised competition at this time.

This means that Barnsley have won only two cups in their history and both were won under the stewardship of Barnsley born managers – Arthur Fairclough in 1912 and Paul Heckingbottom in 2016.

Barnsley and Oxford met for the first time in 17 years with The Reds winning for just the second time in the previous five.

This was also only the third time in 14 meetings that both sides have scored as nine of the previous 10 meetings incredibly finished 0-0, 1-0 or 1-1. The only exception to that was the 5-1 mauling Barnsley suffered at the Manor Ground the week after they had secured promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking of goals, the three Barnsley netted at Wembley was more than in their two previous trips to the national stadium combined (2)

An own goal was scored in a Football League Trophy final for only the third time. On all three occasions – 1998, 2012 and 2016, the beneficiaries of the og have gone on to win- Grimsby 1998, Chesterfield 2012, Barnsley 2016.

This game produced the joint highest amount of goals in a Football League Trophy final. There were also five in 1989 (4-1), 1991 (3-2), 2002 (4-1), 2007 (3-2), 2009 (3-2) and 2010 (4-1)

For the sixth time in a Football League Trophy final the team that opened the scoring went on to lose. This also occurred in 1984, 1989, 1998, 2001 and 2009.

This was the 33rd year of the Football League Trophy and the Wembley attendance for Barnsley and Oxford of 59,230 has only been beaten on six occasions- 1988, 1995, 2000, 2010, 2015.

It is Barnsley’s lowest Wembley attendance however as there were 82,752 in 2008 for the FA Cup Semi-Final against Cardiff and 73,427 in 2000 for the Division One Play-Off final with Ipswich.

Barnsley are the seventh successive League One team to lift the Football League Trophy.

Ivan Toney was the only Barnsley player booked at Wembley and he has now been booked more times (3) than goals he has scored (2). He is the fourth Barnsley player to be booked at Wembley, alongside Rob Kozluk, Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Matty Appleby.

Oxford’s two goals ended a run of three successive clean sheets for Barnsley and was only the third time in 19 games in all competitions that they have conceded twice in a match.

If you count Wembley as being an away game Barnsley have now won their last FIVE away from Oakwell and NINE of the last ELEVEN!

During the course of this season’s Johnstones Paint Trophy campaign Barnsley played four ties away from home and only two at home before the final. Including the final they were behind in four matches but came back in them all (drew with Fleetwood)

Sunday was the sixth time this season Barnsley have conceded first but come back to win.
