Originally the former Barbados international who was born in Sheffield, signed a one-year deal at Boundary Park with the option of a further year, which Oldham activated in May.
However Barnsley are now looking to gazump their League One rivals, just five months after poaching their manager.
As well as the Blades, Forte has also played for South Yorkshire sides Doncaster and Rotherham as well as Scunthorpe, Notts County, Southampton, Preston and Crawley. In total he has scored 65 goals in 347 appearances since starting out at Bramall Lane in 2003.
According to BBC Radio Sheffield, Barnsley are in advanced talks with Forte but as of yet have not brought him to Oakwell for a medical.
