Barnsley v Colchester United

Team News

Barnsley are without Ryan Williams, Paul Digby and Marcello Trotta who are all on international duty.

Devante Cole and Leroy Lita are both vying to replace Trotta in the starting line-up whilst Keith Treacy could replace Williams as he did in the 5-0 victory over Burton last weekend.

Danny Wilson has no injury worries to contend with as The Reds go hunting for a third win in a row for the first time in 19 months and a third successive win with three clean sheets for the first time in eight years!

Interesting Stats:

In each of the last three seasons that Barnsley and Colchester have met, they have clashed in August.

Barnsley have lost just one of the last seven meetings at Oakwell, three of those have been 1-0 wins and two 1-1 draws.

The two sides are quite evenly matched when meeting at Barnsley however, with The Reds just shading it eight wins to six.

This will be the ninth meeting at this level of English football (out of 37 in total). Barnsley have lost just one of the previous eight, four of them have ended in stalemate.

Colchester need one more goal to reach 50 v Barnsley, The Reds need five to reach a half century against the U’s.

Colchester have made an average start to the 2014-2015 League One season winning four and losing seven.

The Essex side who were promoted from League One with Barnsley back in 2006 lost four of their first five league games this season and won one of the first nine.

But now in all competitions they boast a record of just two defeats in their last 10 games home or away.

The U’s have won two at home and two away and have lost just one of their last six league games on the road.

Tony Humes’ side have been big scorers and conceders in League One this season, netting 22 times, the most amongst the bottom half of the table sides, and conceding 24, only five sides have conceded more.

In that sense they have a very similar record to Barnsley. Both sides have conceded 24 goals, whilst The Reds have scored one more themselves.

They have now scored in nine successive games in all competitions, their best run for 12 months.

Like Barnsley, Colchester were among the goals in the first round of the FA Cup last weekend, winning 6-3 at Conference South side Gosport Borough.

It was the first time the U’s had scored six in one game since a 7-1 victory at Norwich on the opening day of the 2009-2010 season.

The U’s did concede three to the Conference South side and they have gone eight games in all competitions without keeping a clean sheet.

Indeed, Colchester have kept just four shutouts all season- which came in the space of five games in September- and three of those were away from home.

Freddie Sears has scored in five of his last six appearances for Colchester.
