Interesting Stats
Barnsley and Everton meet for the first time since The Reds were a Premier League side 17 years ago.
They have met only 14 times ever with the Merseyside outfit holding the upper hand having won eight of those clashes.
Everton are unbeaten in the last seven meetings stretching back to 1951. A 1-0 Barnsley win in December of that year is one of only two The Reds have managed against the Toffees, the other being in the Semi-Finals of the 1910 FA Cup. After a 0-0 draw at Elland Road, Barnsley triumphed 3-0 at Old Trafford before losing the final to Newcastle at Crystal Palace.
Tomorrow will be the first ever League Cup meeting between the two sides but as well as that FA Cup double header 105 years ago, Barnsley and Everton were also drawn together in the First Round of the 1914-1915 edition (three years after Barnsley won the competition) and Everton secured a 3-0 win.
The Toffees won by the same scoreline in the Third Round of 1962-1963 and then 1-0 in the Fifth Round of 1988-1989.
This game could see the return of Mason Holgate to Oakwell for his Everton debut however John Stones is unlikely to feature after handing in a transfer request at Goodison Park.
Everton have got to and been eliminated in the Third Round of the League Cup in each of the past three seasons.
Their best ever finish in the competition was the Semi-Finals of 1988 and 2008.
Despite having failed to win any of their past four home matches going back to the end of last season, Roberto Martinez’s side have won each of their last two on the road.
