Barnsley v Leeds United

Last updated : 04 November 2006 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Bobby Hassell will definitely miss today's crunch Yorkshire derby with Leeds United after suffering a groin strain in the 2-1 midweek defeat at Derby County. Neil Austin will take his place.

Skipper Paul Reid should start despite suffering from sickness and diarrhoea but Danny Nardiello is still not considered ready for a start. Tommy Wright could keep his place upfront.

Barnsley and Leeds meet in a league fixture tomorrow for the first time since the Premiership days with Barnsley looking to continue an impressive home run of 1 defeat in 5 against The struggling Whites.

That defeat came in the last Oakwell meeting back on 29th November 1997 when The Reds threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2.

Ashley Ward and Andy Liddell had fired The Reds 2-0 in front after 28minutes but Alfie Haaland, Rod Wallace and a 82nd minute Derek Lilley strike saw Leeds take back the three points.

Sides:

Barnsley: Leese ,Eaden ,De Zeeuw ,Redfearn ,Liddell (Hristov ,85 ) ,Bullock (Appleby ,79 ) ,Bosancic (Moses ,72 ) ,Tinkler ,Barnard ,Ward ,Markstedt

Beeney, Laurent,

*Gary Kelly still remains at Leeds today!

The Reds were 2nd bottom after that game whilst Leeds were riding high in 4th.

In the return fixture at Elland Road on the 4th April 1998 Leeds triumphed 2-1 thanks to a truly bizarre own-goal from Adie Moses 10 minutes from time. Moses bulleted a header past a startled Watson from a Leeds corner after Georgi Hristov had levelled a Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink goal.

Leeds: Martyn ,Kelly ,Wetherall ,Molenaar ,Martin Hiden ,Harte ,Halle ,Bowyer ,Ribeiro (McPhail ,46 ) ,Kewell ,Hasselbaink

As you can see a certain Stephen McPhail came on for Leeds at half-time!

Both teams remained in 19th and 4th respectively.

As we all know The Reds ended the season 2nd bottom (19th) and their short stay in England's top flight was over, a place we have yet to return. Leeds finished impressively in 5th place, before their financial implosion saw them relegated in 2004.

The two teams have met since that day, in the FA Cup on the 6th January 2001 at Elland Road with Leeds (a Premiership side) winning 1-0 over Barnsley (a Championship side) courtesy of an early Mark Viduka goal.

Onto to 2006-2007 then and both teams are in deep relegation trouble.

Leeds sit just 1 point and 2 places above The Reds in 21st place after a horrendous start. Leeds lost in the Championship Play-Off last term and the hangover from that game is still obvious.

Kevin Blackwell, who led Leeds to last seasons final, was sacked in September with Leeds in the relegation zone and caretaker John Carver didn't do much better.

Last week saw the arrival of former Chelsea stars Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet who had a dream start with a 2-0 home win over fellow strugglers Southend last Saturday. They were sent crashing back down to earth however with a 4-1 hammering at Preston on Tuesday night. Both Barnsley and Leeds have the worst defensive records in the league having both conceded 30 goals each!

A win for The Reds could see them move above Leeds into 21st place, whilst a win for The Whites could move them up a place to 20th and put them 4 points above The Reds.
