Barnsley were working long into Wednesday night to add two more signings to the acquisitions of Adam Jackson, Adam Armstrong, Coke Kpekawa and Sam Morsy this week by securing the loan signature of Celtic’s Saidy Janko on a one year loan deal and both Julio Rodriguez and Jake Clarke for the development squad.
20 year old, Swiss Under 21 international Janko is a right-winger who can also slot in at right back and will remain at Oakwell until the end of the season.
He began his career in his homeland with FC Zurich before signing for Manchester United’s academy in 2013, becoming one of David Moyes’ first signings for the club. He spent the 2014-2015 season at Old Trafford and was named the club’s Reserve Player of the Year whilst also making his first team debut in a harrowing 4-0 League Cup defeat to MK Dons.
Janko was shipped out on loan to Bolton in the 2015 January transfer window and scored on his Trotters debut in a 3-1 win over Fulham before going on to make a further nine appearances.
His form in the Championship saw him earn a move to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic where he signed a four year contract and he made 13 appearances for the Parkhead side as they secured a fifth successive league crown with two of his turn outs coming in European competition- a Champions League 2-0 defeat at Malmo and a Europa League 2-2 draw at Ajax.
Janko has made seven appearances for new manager Brendan Rodgers this season, including 90 minutes in their infamous 1-0 Champions League defeat at Lincoln Red Imps but has gone on to play in each of the three qualifying rounds the club has been involved in and his last appearance was a full 90 minutes in a 2-0 defeat at Hapoel Beer Sheva where Celtic progressed 5-4 on aggregate.
Also arriving at Oakwell was 6ft 4inch 20-year-old Spanish defender Julio Rodriguez who has joined on a season loan from Sporting Gijon. Rodriguez who has represented Spain at Under 18 and Under 19 level will initially start with Barnsley’s development squad, as will Welshman Jake Clarke. The 20-year-old Welsh Under 21 international has joined on a one-year permanent deal from Huddersfield. He made his professional debut for the Terriers against Fulham in 2015.
