Barnsley Chief Executive Ben Mansford has said he expects The Reds to have a “competitive budget” in League One next season as they attempt to bounce back from relegation at the first attempt.

Danny Wilson’s side saw their eight-year stay in the Championship end following a 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday, exactly 17 years to the day that Wilson had led the club to the Premier League back in 1997.

Many of the club’s best players such as Luke Steele, Martin Cranie and Chris O’Grady are expected to be sold this summer but Mansford told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I think we will be an attractive proposition to players who are out of contract or are looking for a new challenge," "I think we will recruit very well."

"We want to put together a strong squad to give the supporters a winning feeling that has probably been missing over the last three or four years."

Mansford also revealed that all the club’s current loan players bar Peter Ramage will return to their parent clubs BEFORE this weekend’s season finale against Queens Park Rangers at Oakwell.

This means Jack Hunt, Ryan McLaughlin, Nick Proschwitz and Marcus Pedersen will play no part.
