They say lightning never strikes twice, but it did for former Barnsley captain Brian Howard at Anfield last night after he was part of a Championship team that humbled Liverpool for the second time in three seasons.
Howard scored the 93rd minute winner to clinch the unforgettable 2-1 Anfield success for the Reds in 2008, and he came off the bench to help Reading to that same scoreline last night.
Just like two years ago, Liverpool forged ahead when Steven Gerrard’s effort was turned into his own goal by Ryan Bertrand but, just like on that sunny February afternoon, there was to be last minute drama. Gylfi Sigurdsson netted a 94th minute penalty to take the game to extra time and Shane Long won the tie for the side 21st in the Championship in the 100th minute.
Reading now host Burnley in the fourth round.
