Midfielder Jacob Butterfield is set to announce where his future lies on Monday with Premier League Norwich City now the hot favourites to sign the out of contract 22 year old.
Butterfield, who has been sidelined with a knee injury since New Years Eve has been the subject of intense speculation with his contract ending on Monday and a new deal offered by Barnsley remaining unsigned. He has been linked with a host of clubs including Newcastle, Sunderland, Everton and Reading, whilst there have also been reports in recent days that he could sign a new contract at Oakwell after being impressed with manager Keith Hill’s summer recruits.
That now looks like not being the case with Norwich and their new manager Chris Hughton set to pounce when the one cap England Under 21 international becomes a “free agent” in under 48 hours.
Hughton saw the qualities of Butterfield at first hand in 2011-2012 when he scored against his then Birmingham City side in a 1-1 draw at St Andrews in September.
The Canaries will be forced to pay some sort of compensation fee as Butterfield is under the age of 24.
