Barnsley striker Danny Haynes was dropped to the bench for the first time this season after it emerged Championship rivals Burnley had made an enquiry about the 23 year old on the eve of this weekend’s games.

The former Millwall and Bristol City goal-scorer who has notched six goals in 24 games for The Reds had played every minute of every game bar the last half an hour of the 2-1 win at Reading last weekend but was surprisingly dropped to the bench for yesterday’s goal-less draw at Millwall in favour of new recruit Danny Drinkwater as manager Keith Hill went for a 4-5-1 formation for the first time this season.

It has now emerged that Burnley who ended Derby’s 100% start to the season with a 2-1 victory at Pride Park yesterday have made an enquiry for Haynes as they face losing top scorer and former Oakwell loanee Jay Rodriguez who was the subject of a £4.5m bid from Southampton on Friday.

Hill had reiterated this week that Haynes was not for sale but it remains to be seen whether that stance stays the same if and when an official bid is lodged.
