Coca Cola Matchday Eighteen: Crystal Palace v Barnsley

Last updated : 18 November 2006 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Marc Richards is out with a thigh strain and with Danny Cadamarteri not looking like being signed up in time for today's game; it will be a straight choice between Daniel Nardiello and Paul Hayes to partner Tommy Wright upfront. I never thought Id say that!!

Andy Ritchie has threatened changes as The Reds have now lost their last SEVEN away games but the only other change expected is Bobby Hassell for Neil Austin.

Probable Line-Up:

Nick Colgan

Bobby Hassell

Paul Reid ©

Antony Kay

Paul Heckingbottom

Martin Devaney

Sam Togwell

Brian Howard

Michael McIndoe

Daniel Nardiello

Tommy Wright

The Reds travel to Selhurst Park today looking for their first away victory over Palace since the Play-Off Final season of 1999-2000.

Barnsley do have a good record at Crystal Palace however winning 11 of the 23 encounters to Palace's 9.

The last two victories have coincided with two of Barnsley's most successful seasons in recent history.

The win in 2000 by 2-0 saw The Reds head to Wembley for the Play-Off Final and the previous victory, 1-0 was during the Premiership heyday.

That wasn't the last time they triumphed at Selhurst Park however. The Reds defeated Palace's former joint tenants Wimbledon (now MK Dons) 1-0 in the final game of the 2001-2002 season when The Reds were relegated to League One.

The last meeting between the two sides at Selhurst Park came on the 22nd September 2001in Division One. Crystal Palace triumphed 1-0 that day due to a last gasp Aki Riihilahti goal to leave Barnsley without a single away point.

Subs not used O'Callaghan, Ghent,

Tommy Black and Clinton Morrison are still at Palace today.

After this game Crystal Palace sat in 10th position whilst Barnsley were slumped in 19th.

The two teams met at Oakwell on the 26th February 2002 with Palace thumping The Reds 4-1 to make it 3 defeats on the spin.

Freedman put Palace 1-0 on 29minutes before Bruce Dyer equalised on 41.

Palace took control in the second half however with Riihilahti (56), Akinbiyi(83) and Gray (85) seeing Palace cruise home.

Subs not used Kolinko, Black,

Crystal Palace were up to 7th after that fine win but poor Barnsley were down in 20th.

Crystal Palace finished the season in a disappointing 10th place with 66 points from 46 games.

Barnsley however had a much worst time finished 23rd with 48 points from 46 games and thus relegated to Division Two.

Onto 2006-2007 and New Palace boss Peter Taylor is under pressure after seeing his side slump to 20th place in the Championship, just 2 points above the relegation zone.

Expectations are high at Selhurst Park after a great last few seasons under Iain Dowie. Palace were promoted to the Premiership through the Play-Offs in 2003-2004. Their stay in the Premiership only lasted one season however and they were defeated in the Championship Play-Offs Semi-Finals by eventual winners Watford last season. The departure of manager Dowie and top scorer Andy Johnson seems to have hit Palace hard and despite starting the season with 3 straight wins, they have now lost their last 4 and haven't won in 8 outings.

Barnsley however aren't faring any better. They have lost their last SEVEN away games and have won just 1 of the last 10 games.

Last time out Palace were beaten 1-0 at home by Stoke City whilst Barnsley were defeated 2-0 at Birmingham.

A win for Palace today could move them up from 20th up to as high as 18th whilst a Barnsley victory could see them leap from 23rd to as high as 21st, in the case of a 6 goal victory over Palace, they would then jump above the Eagles into 20th...
