Coca-Cola Championship Matchday Forty Three: Barnsley v Derby County

Last updated : 10 April 2010 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Team News

Barnsley are set to be missing a host of first team regulars for the penultimate home game of 2009-2010. In defence, Darren Moore is struggling with a hamstring injury, Bobby Hassell played in the 2-2 draw with Peterborough on Monday with pain-killing injections and Rob Kozluk is still not fully fit after three months on the sidelines. Ryan Shotton returns from suspension so should replace Moore. In midfield, Emil Hallfredsson has returned to parent club Reggina after suffering a broken foot in the 0-0 draw at Sheffield United, and Filipe Teixeira is still a doubt after limping out of the 1-0 defeat to Doncaster. Whilst upfront The Reds only have Iain Hume fully fit. Daniel Bogdanovic still looks doubtful with the knee injury suffered in the 5-3 defeat Bristol City, whilst Jon Macken (stomach) and Andy Gray are all carrying knocks- manager Mark Robins revealed Gray has been struggling since the win over Watford on the 6th February.

Likely Lineup:

Luke Steele

Luke Potter

Ryan Shotton

Stephen Foster

Adam Hammill

Hugo Colace

Jacob Butterfield

Martin Devaney

Jon Macken

Iain Hume

Head To Head

Mark Robins will have happy memories of facing the Rams as he claimed his first win as Barnsley manager at Pride Park back in September. It was also The Reds first league win of 2009-2010 after losing five and drawing one of their first six matches. It looked like being six defeats from seven when Rob Hulse gave the Rams the lead but Barnsley stormed back with Adam Hammill, Andy Gray and Anderson De Silva giving The Reds a 3-1 lead. Shaun Barker made it 3-2 in the eight minutes of injury time added on for an injury to Emil Hallfredsson.

This victory extended The Reds unbeaten run against the Rams to three games, having taken four points off them last season. The Reds triumphed 2-0 at Oakwell in August 2008- ironically this was The Reds first victory of that season too. Late goals from Iain Hume and Stephen Foster put the first points on the board.

They followed this up then with a credible 0-0 draw at Pride Park in March, when both teams missed a catalogue of chances to seal the win.

The Reds have a decent home record against The Rams, having won 12 of the 25 Oakwell meetings and lost nine. The league leaders Derby went two up through David Jones and Matt Oakley before Sam Togwell grabbed a consolation in the 90th minute. A certain Jon Macken and Darren Moore were in Derby’s side that day. The Rams would win only two of the remaining six games after that but won promotion via the playoffs.

This Season

It has been a frustrating season for Derby County and their loyal supporters- who have been through a lot in recent years. In 2007-2008 they became officially the worst side in Premier League history when they won just once and gained a miserly 11 points. Optimism was high for a promotion push in 2008-2009 under Paul Jewell but he left before 2008 was out and under Nigel Clough they finished 18th. This season doesn’t look to be faring much better as inconsistency has blighted The Rams all season. This can be perfectly highlighted in their home form. At Pride Park- where they are yet to see attendances under 26,000 this campaign, they have won 11 times, which is the best total outside the top seven, BUT they have also lost eight times at home this season-including one to Barnsley- which is the most outside the bottom five! Their away form has been poor as well. Clough’s side have managed just three wins on the road this season (only relegated Peterborough have won less away), but one of those was in their last away game- 1-0 at Coventry and they are unbeaten in their last three matches away from Pride Park (1 win 2 draws)

Barnsley are on their worst run under Mark Robins, having gone six without victory. They started the season without a win in six… and then played Derby and won! If history doesn’t repeat itself and they stretch their winless run to seven matches it will be the first time they have gone this long without tasting victory since March/April 2009, when they failed to win in eight- including a 0-0 draw at Derby. The Reds have had a torrid 2010 compared with the fantastic ending to 2009. Only Peterborough have lost more games this calendar year than Barnsley having lost 10 of the 20 matches played. They have also failed to score in five of the last eight games and are currently on a run of one win in nine and three successive draws, the last time they drew four league games in a row was in League One in December 2004/January 2005.

Barnsley have a good record on the 10th April having won 13 and lost just 6 of the 23 games played on this date. They won their first four 10th April matches, against Burslem Port Vale, Gainsborough Trinity, Fulham and Stockport, but have won just one of the last three. David Murphy put The Reds 1-0 up before Stuart Gray replied, but Kevin Betsy and Alex Neil gave The Reds a 3-1 half time lead. Barry Hunter netted Rushden’s second.

Derby however have won just seven and lost 13 of the 24 matches they have played on the 10th April but are unbeaten in the last three, winning two of them. They defeated Brentford 3-2 in 1993; bitter rivals Nottingham Forest 1-0 in 1999 before drawing 0-0 with West Ham last time out in 2004.
