Head to Head
If there's one place on the planet that Barnsley do not want to be going to on this wretched run, it is Hillsborough. The Reds have lost in each of their last ELEVEN visits to hated rivals Sheffield Wednesday, spanning 26 years. The only exception in that run was a penalty shootout victory in the Full Members Cup in 1990. Apart from that it has been total misery since Ronnie Glavin scored the only goal in 1983.

To be fair The Reds have come close to ending the sequence in their last two visits. In 2006, Brian Howard cancelled out a strike from Glenn Whelan. But in injury time Chris Brunt hit a speculative volley that flew into the back of the net. Last season The Reds- at the time on the edge of the Championship play-offs, dominated the game but lost out to an Akpo Sodje header.

Barnsley got a semblance of revenge at Oakwell earlier this season when they beat the Owls for the first time in 10 meetings home or away. Iain Hume and a Jamal Campbell-Ryce penalty put The Reds 2-0 up before Wednesday got a controversial penalty of their own which Leon Clarke converted. The Reds held on for a famous 2-1 win.

That is the only memorable game between the two sides in recent times for Reds fans. The worst was easily the 3-0 crushing Wednesday delivered to The Reds at Oakwell in December 2006. Simon Davey got the Barnsley job on a permanent basis the next day!
That though is the only game in the last 10 meetings in which a team has won by more than one goal.

This Season

Sheffield Wednesday's fortunes have been up and down in recent weeks, and can probably summed up by the fact that two Saturdays ago, they won at hated rivals Sheffield United for the first time in 42 years to claim their first Steel City double in 96 years, only to then lose at Doncaster for the first time EVER seven days later. Whilst Wednesday's away form is one of the worst in the division- they have conceded 33 goals- the worst away against column in the division, they are unbeaten at home in the league since November ( a run of six games- three wins and three draws.)

Barnsley are currently on their worst run of results for eight years, having lost five in a row. This game pits one of the best home records against one of the worst away records too. The last time Barnsley had lost five on the spin was in 2000-2001. The last time The Reds lost six in a row was at the start of the 1986-87 season when they lost their first six games of that season. They did finish that season in a credible 11th however, losing just nine of the other 36 games (it was a 42 game season)

In local derbies this season Wednesday have won three (against Sheffield United (2) and Doncaster) and lost two (to Barnsley and Doncaster) whilst also being knocked out of the Carling Cup by Rotherham on penalties.

Barnsley have won three local derbies this season ( Doncaster (2) and Wednesday) and lost one (Sheffield United.)
