Coca-Cola Championship Matchday Thirty Two: Barnsley v Charlton Athletic

Last updated : 20 February 2009 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Team News

Reds boss Simon Davey is set to stick with the same team that ended the Hillsborough hoodoo on Tuesday night. Darren Moore and Jamal Campbell-Ryce picked up their fifth bookings of the season against Wednesday but because of a seven day rule, they are available for this match. Diego Leon, Michael Coulson and Iain Hume are the only players who remain injured.

Likely Line-Up:

Heinz Muller
Marciano Van Homoet
Darren Moore
Stephen Foster
Bobby Hassell
Hugo Colace
Anderson De Silva
Andranik Teymourian.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce
Daniel Bogdanovic
Michael Mifsud

Head to Head

Barnsley have a pretty decent, recent record against Charlton and are unbeaten in their last four meetings with the Addicks. They also haven't lost at home to them since 1995.

Last season, a last gasp Kim Christensen strike earned a point at the Valley, whilst goals from Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Lewin Nyatanga and Jon Macken sealed a 3-0 win at Oakwell on the penultimate weekend of the season to preserve The Reds Championship status.

They went one better at the Valley this season however as goals from Jon Macken (2) and Darren Moore sealed a very impressive 3-1 win- Barnsley's first EVER at Charlton. This was during The Reds best run of the season and means they are gunning for their fourth "double" of the season- something they haven't done since the promotion season of 2005-2006. Interestingly, all Barnsley's away wins so far (barring Charlton) have turned into "doubles"...

This Season

2008-2009 has been nothing short of disastrous for a Charlton side who were a Premier League side of seven years up until 2007. The preceding two years have been a downward spiral for the Addicks and after finishing 11th in the Championship last season, they currently prop up the division, eight points adrift of safety. They did give themselves a fighting chance last weekend however when they defeated Plymouth 2-0 at the Valley, but that was only their second win in 22 league games. They are currently on a run of eight straight defeats away from home and have the worst away record in the Championship, having won just once- at Doncaster in September. Their record against Yorkshire sides is also poor this season. Apart from the 1-0 win at the Keepmoat they have lost their other six league and cup meetings with Yorkshire sides, and their last league visit to this county saw them hammered 4-0 at Hillsborough, and hey even we can win there....

Barnsley will hopefully take a lot of confidence into the game after not only ending their Hillsborough hoodoo but also by putting an end to a run of five straight defeats- their worst run for nine years. The Reds have also not won at Oakwell since the 20th December, drawing one and losing two of the three games since.
