Davey had a reasonably good spell as caretaker manger. He won his first two games in charge and drew the second two. Under his guidance we lost the next two games at Leicester City and QPR. He followed that up with a 1-0 win at home to Burnley and the debacle 3-0 defeat to Sheff Wed.
The club statement to the website read:
THE Board of Barnsley Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Simon Davey as First Team Manager with immediate effect.
This decision will allow squad strengthening to commence promptly in the January transfer window.
Davey has this morning, also spoken to the official website after his appointment:
NEW Barnsley manager Simon Davey spoke of his delight after landing the top job at Oakwell on a permanent basis today.
Simon told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk: "I am very excited and it is an absolute honour to be asked to manage a club of this stature. I have thoroughly enjoyed being in charge for the last month and cannot wait to move things forward.
"Now is a time for the entire club to pull together and unite behind our aim of staying in the Championship. The players have been tremendous over the last month and I am sure that work ethic will remain and we will move forward.
"It is always a surprise when you are asked to do something like this. I have been in constant dialogue with the Board over the last month or so and there was always the suspicion that if results continued to go well then the decision could go my way. The Board have been loyal to me and it is a tremendous honour to have the future of this Club in my hands.
"I do not think it will feel any different at Wolves tomorrow because we know that it is a massive game and one of our 20 Cup Finals between now and the end of the season. Hopefully the decision will settle the players down a little as they now know that they have to impress me both on the training field and on the pitch if they are to get a place in the team.
"I am due to sit down with the Chairman in the next week to discuss terms and to finalise the contract".
Scarborough Tyke's verdict: In my opinion I feel the board have taken the easy way out. Davey will have been the cheaper of the contenders. If I was the Chairman, I will have tried to get Iain Dowie in but we'll jist have to see how Davey does. He's got a decent record as caretaker, only time will tell.
Barnsley Boy's Verdict: Disgusted Im afraid, after promises from the Board that they would interview candidates and pick the right man they have, as usual, picked the cheap option. Maybe Im wrong as there was huge opposition to Ritchie and look what he did. But I honestly can't see lightning striking twice.
