Today’s national media has reported that Barnsley’s acting captain Stephen Dawson has been arrested over the spot-fixing probe that has engulfed football.
According to both the Daily Mail and BBC Sport, Dawson, 28, who has been wearing the armband in the absence of the injured Martin Cranie, was arrested by police, interviewed and bailed.
As of yet there is no concrete evidence as to what the former Leyton Orient midfielder has been arrested for but it is believed to centre around the spot-fixing probe that has also affected League One outfit Preston North End. Six of their players, John Welsh, Keith Keane, Bailey Wright David Buchanan, Ben Davies and Graham Cummins have also been arrested, although their club have released a statement claiming that they are all available for selection for tomorrow.
Barnsley also released a statement, which unfortunately was unable to shed much light on the situation. It read:
“Barnsley Football Club is aware of reports in the media in connection with an investigation into individuals suspected of Conspiracy to commit acts of Bribery and Money Laundering relating to conduct during football matches.”
"At this time the Club has no further comment to make."
The initial probe started back in December when Sam Sodje allegedly told an undercover reporter that he could arrange for players to pick up yellow cards in return for tens of thousands of pounds.
