Barnsley did make a double swoop on deadline day but to the dismay of many Reds supporters no experienced striker was signed to replace the departed Sam Winnall and Stefan Payne.
Following the departure of James Bree and injury to Aidy White, full back Callum Elder was the first to arrive on loan from Premier League champions Leicester City. The 22 year old was born in Australia and represented the country of his birth at Under 20 despite moving to England at the age of 16 to sign a scholarship deal with the Foxes.
Despite having yet to make a first team appearance for Leicester he has signed a contract until 2019 and spent time out on loan at Mansfield, Peterborough and earlier this campaign at Brentford where his spell was cut short by a thigh injury in December.
Elder will remain at Oakwell until the end of the season.
Also arriving as the clock ticked away was 21-year-old Ryan Hedges on a permanent deal from Swansea City.
Hedges worked his way through the Everton Academy but joined Swansea in 2013 after a short spell at Flint Town United.
Between 2015 and yesterday he has spent time on loan at Leyton Orient, Stevenage and Yeovil with his last appearance for Yeovil taking place on Boxing Day. Hedges who can play as a winger or striker has penned a two and a half year contract.
