Deadline Day Special: Reds Clinch Mifsud Loan Deal

Last updated : 02 February 2009 By Alastair Limb (tykesmad)
Barnsley have signed Coventry City striker Michael Mifsud on loan until the end of the season.

The Reds have previously had a £300,000 bid for the Maltese striker accepted but failure to agree personal terms set up a loan move which has just been confirmed.

Mifsud will team up with his Malta international strike partner Daniel Bogdanovic at Oakwell and comes carrying an impressive record.

He has scored 20 goals in 60 international games. He began his career with Sliema Wanderers, scoring 60 in 80 games before attracting interest from Kaiserslautern where he was less successful, netting 2 in 21.

Sliema re-signed Mifsud in 2003 and he bagged another 8 in 12 games for them before signing for Norweigan side Lillestrom. He played with Reds keeper Heinz Muller whilst there and scored 17 in 48.

Coventry then gave him his move to England in 2007 and he has scored 16 in 84 for the Sky Blues including two goals against the Reds in two 4-1 victories for Coventry.

He has today signed on until the end of the season. He told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk that Barnsley's persistence to sign him was the key to his move:

"Barnsley showed non- stop commitment to getting me to join them, including getting Heinz Muller to ring me night and day. I have also spent two days at the club talking to Simon Davey and Don Rowing and looking at the facilities. I had the chance to join other Championship clubs and had strong La Liga interest, but the important thing is to get the chance to play in a direct attacking role.

"I must say that the signing of Daniel Bogdanovic was influential, a very clever ploy indeed.I look forward to playing with my Malta strike partner and getting the chance to play with Heinz again.I was close to signing a permanent deal, but I just needed more time to think it through and time was in short supply. I can't wait to get playing and help the team move forward."

The transfer window shuts at 5pm this afternoon with clubs looking to rush through last minute deals.

Mifsud is the first signing on deadline day!
