Barnsley defender Rob Edwards played around ten minutes of former Wolves team-mate Matt Murray’s testimonial on Sunday as he battles to regain fitness from a hamstring injury that has sidelined the summer signing from Blackpool since the 1-1 draw with Leicester at the start of September.
The 28 year old played around 15 minutes in the Wolves vs. All-Stars match which finished 7-2 to a Wolverhampton side containing players from the past plus their current manager- Reds legend Mick McCarthy.
“Macca” was born and bred in Barnsley and captained the side during a 272 game six year stint at Oakwell between 1977 and 1983.
The match was in aid of their former goalkeeper Matt Murray who tragically saw his career cut short last year at the age of 29 following a long battle with a knee injury. The beginning of his problems started in the summer of 2007- after scooping the PFA Fans Player of the Year Award when the former England U21 goal-keeper ruptured his cruciate knee ligament injury, forcing him to miss the entire 2007-2008 season. Murray was sent out on loan to Hereford in November 2008, but played just two matches before suffering a ruptured patella tendon in his knee, which put him on the sidelines for another 12 months. He appeared in a Wolves reserve game in November 2009 but after suffering discomfort in his knee, was withdrawn after just 23 minutes and this proved his last appearance for Wolves, before he finally announced his sad retirement in August 2010.
In regards to Edwards, Reds boss Keith Hill told the Sheffield Star:
“Rob’s doing really well, but there’s no rush to get him back,”
“The players that have come in because of the injuries have done really well and the team is playing well, so we’re not going to rush him back if he’s not 100 per cent."
