Team News

The 2008 semi-finalists have Carl Dickinson and Ryan Shotton back and available for this season’s foray into the FA Cup. Dickinson and Shotton completed their return on loan from Stoke today and will remain at Oakwell until the end of the season. They may struggle to get into the side after the back four on Monday performed so well.

Other than that manager Mark Robins has a full squad to pick from. Kayode Odejayi has joined Colchester permanently but Martin Devaney has returned from MK Dons.

Likely Lineup:

Luke Steele

Rob Kozluk

Darren Moore

Stephen Foster

Bobby Hassell

Adam Hammill/ Jacob Butterfield

Anderson De Silva

Hugo Colace

Emil Hallfredsson

Andy Gray

Daniel Bogdanovic

Head To Head

Tomorrow’s meeting is the second of three games in three months between these two sides. Last month they drew 1-1 at Oakwell and they play the return league encounter on the 16th February. The December meeting was a dreary encounter with old Oakwell man Paul Hayes cancelling out an effort from Hugo Colace. That stalemate denied The Reds the chance of recording three successive victories for the second time this season. That result also meant Barnsley are now unbeaten in four matches against the Iron, stretching back to a 2-1 defeat at Glanford Park in August 2005.

The two sides have met just twice in the FA Cup, with both ties in the third round and both going to replays. They met at Glanford Park in 1964, drawing 2-2 before Barnsley won 3-2 after extra time at Oakwell. Then in 2004 a 0-0 draw at Oakwell was followed by Scunthorpe triumphing 2-0 in the replay- that game is the last time the Iron have progressed beyond this stage of the competition. Barnsley have never won at Glanford Park in the three trips they have made since the ground was built in 1988.

Overall Record:

Scunthorpe Wins: 11

Barnsley Wins: 15

Draws: 5

Scunthorpe Goals: 37

Barnsley Goals: 48

At Scunthorpe (12 meetings at the Old Showground, three at Glanford Park:

Scunthorpe Wins: 9

Barnsley Wins: 4

Draws: 2

Scunthorpe Goals: 25

Barnsley Goals: 12

This Season

Scunthorpe are on a wretched run of form and have won just once in their last 11 matches, which has dropped them to within a point of the relegation zone.

They have also failed to score more than one in a match since beating Newcastle 2-1 back in October. Worryingly for them they had the same run around this time of year last time they were in the Championship- and were relegated but they do have a decent home record- winning five matches, including promotion challenging Newcastle and Sheffield United.

Barnsley are on their best run of form at this level for eight years – Monday’s 2-1 win over Middlesbrough making it eight games unbeaten. They have also scored in nine successive league games, their longest run since the end of 2005-2006 and beginning of 2006-2007 when they netted in 12 matches in a row in all competitions.

Overall playing record for 2nd January:

Scunthorpe have only played on this day 11 times in their history- the last of which being in 2006 when they drew 1-1 at Bournemouth- Scunthorpe and Barnsley actually met on the 1st January in 2008. The Iron haven’t won on the 2nd January since 1988 when they beat Cambridge 3-2 in Division Four, since then they have lost 5-1 to Halifax in 1989 and 4-3 to Wrexham in 1999, along with the Bournemouth draw.

Scunthorpe: Played 11, Won 3, Drawn 3, Lost 5, Scored 20, Conceded 24

Barnsley have an awful record on the 2nd January, winning just three times in 20 matches. They lost their first eight matches played on this date, which included a 7-3 hammering at Manchester City in 1928 and a 9-1 thumping from Bradford in 1932. They have drawn their last two matches on this day 0-0, at Swindon in 1999 and Chesterfield in 2006. Their three victories are 4-1 against Carlisle in 1933, 2-0 over Bradford Park Avenue in 1954 and 2-1 over Colchester in 1960.

Barnsley: Played 20, Won 3, Drawn 4, Lost 13, Scored 21, Conceded 51.
