FA Cup Third Round: West Ham United v Barnsley

Last updated : 02 January 2009 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Team News

The FA Cup adventure starts up again tomorrow with memories of last year's surge to the semi-finals still fresh in the memory, and Barnsley head to Upton Park without full-back Rob Kozluk. Although doctors have confirmed Kozzie has not suffered a fractured cheekbone, his face is still sore and bruised and he will not be considered. He should be back for the league game with Southampton next weekend. Jamie Cureton is ineligible as parent club Norwich have refused him permission to play. This should give Maceo Rigters his first start since October. Kozluk's absence should see Hugo Colace come back into the side with Bobby Hassell reverting to right back, Marciano Van Homoet at left back and Colace back in his customary holding midfield role. It will be Colace's and Anderson De Silva's first taste of the FA Cup.

Head to Head

Tomorrow will be the second time West Ham and Barnsley have met in the FA Cup, with the first meeting back in 1993 leading to a 4-1 Barnsley triumph at Oakwell, with Andy Rammell grabbing a hat-trick and Reds legend Neil Redfearn also on target. This was in the Fourth Round and Barnsley went down 2-0 at Manchester City in the next round. West Ham were not too upset though as they won promotion to the Premier League at the end of that season.

One cup success that does live long in the memory is the one Second Division Barnsley inflicted on First Division West Ham at Upton Park in the League Cup in 1987.

The two sides met at Oakwell in the first leg and drew 0-0 but then the second leg was something to rival the FA Cup wins over Liverpool and Chelsea for the fans who were down in East London that night. Barnsley stunned the Hammers with a fantastic 5-2 win. Unfortunately Sheffield Wednesday would eliminate The Reds in the next round. That 5-2 win is the last time The Reds have won at Upton Park- losing three of the four visits since. Indeed they have won just twice there ever. That 5-2 cup success and 2-0 in a Second Division game way back in 1919. That result came just seven days after The Reds had thumped the Hammers 7-0 at Oakwell!

The last time the two sides met was in Barnsley's one and only Premier League season. West Ham were the first side Barnsley faced on an historic afternoon at Oakwell on the 9th August 1997. A superb header from that man Redfearn had Reds fans in delirium after nine minutes but second half strikes from John Hartson and Frank Lampard showed what Barnsley were up against.

FA Cup History:

West Ham

West Ham have a proud FA Cup history having won the famous competition three times - in 1964, 1975 and 1980, whilst finishing runners-up on another two occasions- 1923 and 2006.

Since that final with Liverpool in 2006 they have failed to get past the Fourth Round. Watford knocked them out at that stage, at Upton Park in 2007 whilst they went out in a Third Round Replay to Manchester City last season. It is also worth noting that The Hammers went out in the Third Round of the League Cup this year to Championship opposition- Watford again their nemesis.

West Ham have won 79 of their 144 home ties, losing 23.

Barnsley

After the cup win of 1912, last season proved to be historic for Barnsley Football Club as far as the FA Cup is concerned. If reaching their first semi-final since that final win over West Brom 96 years previously wasn't enough the fact they had knocked out the previous two winners- Liverpool and Chelsea- on the way certainly capped it. Can they do it again this season is the question! Last season was the first time The Reds had progressed beyond the Third Round for nine seasons.

Barnsley have won 27 of their 126 away ties, losing 64.

This Season

West Ham have had a pretty turbulent season so far under their new management team of Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke (ironically both men have connections with Chelsea, who The Reds famously eliminated for their 100th win in the FA Cup. Zola was a playing stalwart at Stamford Bridge, making 312 appearances for the club between 1996 and 2003, scoring 80 goals. He featured for the Blues in the 6-0 win over Barnsley in the 1997-1998 season and was an unused substitute in Chelsea's 2-0 win at the Bridge. He was recently voted the club's best ever player. Clarke meanwhile spent even longer at the Bridge. He made 330 appearances scoring seven goals between 1987 and 1998 and started both the two Premier League meetings between Chelsea and Barnsley. He then went on to coach the Blues until the summer of 2008 when he linked up with Zola at West Ham. Clarke was in the away dugout at Oakwell last season when The Reds claimed their famous 1-0 win.)

The Hammers lost four games in a row in October but have picked up in recent weeks, securing their first back to back wins of the season over Christmas- 4-1 at Portsmouth and 2-1 at home to Stoke, to move them up to 10th in the Premier League. They have lost five home games already this season.

Barnsley take a three game unbeaten league run down to London after wins over Plymouth and Burnley and a draw with Preston. Before each of their wins in the FA Cup last season, they had not won the previous league game, which could be a good omen.
