Reds boss Mark Robins may be forced into one change for the FA Cup trip to Upton Park tomorrow. It has not yet been decided whether full back Matt Hill will be allowed to play in the game by his parent club Wolves. Kieran Trippier will be able to play after he extended his loan from Manchester City until the end of the season.

Barnsley head to Upton Park for a FA Cup Third Round tie for the second time in three years this weekend. The two sides met in East London at the same stage back in January 2009. It was the Reds first FA Cup tie since the Semi-Final at Wembley but they were resoundly beaten 3-0 by the Premier League side.

Herita Ilunga and a Mark Noble penalty give the Hammers a 2-0 half time lead before Carlton Cole sealed West Ham’s passage in the second half.

That encounter was the first time the two sides had met since Barnsley’s Premier League season of 1997-1998, when the Hammers did the double over the Reds. The Oakwell meeting was an historic moment for Barnsley Football Club as it was their first ever match in English football’s top division. A then capacity crowd of 18,667 converged on Oakwell on a boiling hot August afternoon and the vast majority of them were in delirium when skipper Neil Redfearn put the Reds in front after just nine minutes of the season. Unfortunately West Ham would ruin the party in the second half when John Hartson and Frank Lampard netted to give the Hammers the spoils.

It was not as close an encounter when The Reds travelled to Upton Park in the January however. The Hammers crushed the Reds 6-0 thanks to goals from Lampard, Samassi Abou (2), John Moncur, Hartson and Stan Lazaridis.

Defeat at West Ham has become a familiar theme for Barnsley as they have lost 21 of their 27 trips there and have won just twice- in a League Cup tie in 1987 and in their first ever trip to Upton Park in 1919. The League Cup affair was a cracking result for the Reds as they were a Second Division outfit compared to the Hammers First Division status. The two sides drew 0-0 at Oakwell in September 1987, before a stunning 5-2 win at Upton Park the following month!

Whilst the Reds may have suffered FA Cup defeat to West Ham in 2009, they did knock the Hammers out of the competition in the 1992-1993 season. The two sides met three times that campaign as they were both in English football’s second tier- although the Hammers would win promotion that year.

The FA Cup meeting arose in the Fourth Round at Oakwell, with Barnsley having beaten Leicester in the Third Round and West Ham having dispensed of West Brom.

It was an afternoon to remember for the Barnsley faithful in the 13,716 crowd as Andy Rammell hit a hat-trick with Redfearn also on the scoresheet to put Barnsley into the Fifth Round. They would go out to Manchester City by a 2-0 score-line in that round.

This Season:

It has been a season of struggle for West Ham so far, which comes on the back of finishing just one place and five points off the relegation zone last season. They go into tomorrow’s game propping up the Premier League table after a 5-0 hammering at Newcastle on Wednesday night. That defeat ended a promising mini-run for Avram Grant’s side of four unbeaten, which included two wins. The Hammers have though won just four of their 22 games and have the worst goal difference in the division. An ominous statistic for Hammers supporters is that the club was bottom of the table on Christmas Day, and only one side has managed to stop up after being bottom on that day in the history of the Premier League- West Brom in 2004-2005. Barnsley were bottom at Christmas in their one season in the Premier League too.

Barnsley head into the FA Cup after an impressive 2-1 home victory over Coventry on Monday which ended a run of three matches without victory. It does though mean that The Reds have won five of their last nine matches, but they have won only twice on the road and scored just 11 times away from Oakwell this season.

FA Cup Record

West Ham have an FA Cup history to be proud of having won the famous competition three times, and come runners-up on another two occasions. Their last victory came in 1980 when a single Trevor Brooking goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Arsenal. They also won a thrilling final in 1964 when they defeated Everton 3-2 at Wembley. The Hammers were 2-1 down going into the final two minutes of the game, but Geoff Hurst and Ron Boyce struck right at the death to give West Ham their first FA Cup victory. They were also champions in 1975 when a brace from Alan Taylor secured a 2-0 win over Fulham.

The Hammers most recent success in the competition was when they reached the final at the Millennium Stadium in 2006. It looked like they were set for their fourth FA Cup when they led 3-2 going into the final minute against Liverpool. But then up stepped Steven Gerrard to score one of the best FA Cup Final goals of all time to level the scores. And Liverpool eventually won 3-1 on penalties. The Hammers have not progressed past the Fifth Round since that game.

Barnsley have just one FA Cup success to their name when they defeated West Brom 1-0 in a replay at Bramall Lane courtesy of Harry Tufnell’s goal two minutes from the end of extra time. The Reds were also finalists in 1910 when a brace from Harry Shepherd saw them lose 2-0 against Newcastle at Goodison Park. Since those two games, the closest Barnsley got to glory were Quarter-Final appearances in 1936, 1961, 1985, 1998 and 1999. That was until the memorable run to the Semi-Finals in 2008 when they dispensed of Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Chelsea, only to go down 1-0 to fellow Championship side Cardiff at Wembley. The Chelsea win courtesy of THAT header from Kayode Odejayi is Barnsley’s last victory in the FA Cup as they went out in the Third Round in 2009- 3-0 to tomorrow’s opponents West Ham and 1-0 at Scunthorpe last year. The win against Chelsea was Barnsley’s 100^th in the competition, but defeat tomorrow would their 100^th defeat.

If Barnsley fans are looking for a good omen then the man in West Ham’s dugout tomorrow- Avram Grant- was in charge of Chelsea on that famous night at Oakwell in March 2008. Although Grant did reach the FA Cup Final last season when his then Portsmouth side went down to a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
