Reds manager David Flitcroft has told BBC Radio Sheffield that the club has made contact with Premier League Hull City over a move for striker Aaron McLean.
Humberside media reported earlier in the week that both the Reds and Blackpool had made enquiries to the Tigers over McLean, but after Blackpool secured the signing of Michael Chopra today, and having had a bid accepted for Bristol City striker Steven Davies, it seems Barnsley are in pole position for McLean.
Flitcroft told Radio Sheffield:
"We're speaking club-to-club at the moment,"
"If we can negotiate a deal successfully then I'll speak to the player and see if he is right for this group."
He added: "There's a lot of players who you think will suit the group and then when you speak to them you realise they aren't willing to work as hard as the guys we already have here."
It has been reported that McLean has spent the week training with the Reds, so he could be the final piece of the jigsaw going into the 2013/14 SkyBet Championship season, which starts in nine days with a home game against relegated Wigan Athletic.
