Reds boss Paul Hart has informed seven current players they are surplus to requirements at Oakwell.
Out-of-contract players Peter Handyside, Craig Ireland, Garry Monk, Alex Neil, Tony Gallimore, Steve Hayward, Dean Gorre and Brian O'Callaghan have been told that they will not be having their contracts renewed.
Non-contract goalkeeper Danny Alcock has also been released.
Meanwhile, Kevin Betsy and Chris Lumsdon, both with still a year on their contracts, have been told they are also free to find another club.
Hart told the official Barnsley FC website ''It is a very difficult time of the year for everybody in football and I am aware of the significance of the decisions for both the club and the players concerned,'
''I've given the whole situation a great deal of thought in recent weeks and am working on the best way to take the club forward.''
However, Hart has opted to extend the contracts of a trio of Antony Kay, Neil Austin and Jacob Burns.
Tykes Mad reckons Paul Hart better have some good signings lined up or getting rid of some of our more consistent players such as Ireland (one of our players of the season) will look very hasty. It's more understandable when players have had so many injury problems like Dean Gorre.
