Barnsley's outgoing director and general manager Don Rowing has said deals to bring Motherwell striker Michael Higdon and ex-Bristol City forward Jon Stead to Oakwell are dead in the water.
Rowing admitted the Reds had made offers to both players but had not heard anything back from either, presumably with both looking for a better deal elsewhere. Rowing told the Sheffield Star:
“We’re not pursuing them any more, both of those deals have gone dead. We expressed an interest in wanting to sign them, but they never came back to us.”
The Reds have already bolstered their squad so far this summer with the signings of Bayern Munich winger Dale Jennings and last season's loanee Chris O'Grady.
Meanwhile, the club are hoping to organise a home friendly against a side from continental Europe. Club Brugge and Steaua Bucharest are two sides being mooted for a potential fixture in July.
In other news, ex-Reds defender Stephen Foster has joined Tranmere Rovers on a two year contract. Foster made 244 appearances in six years at Oakwell and has wasted no time in finding a new club in League One.
