Reds boss Keith Hill has admitted he tried to sign Manchester City’s Gai Assulin and Rochdale’s Joe Thompson on loan before last weekend’s game with Coventry but says now the club’s injury crisis is easing he has no desire to add to his squad.
The Reds have been struck badly with injuries in recent weeks with up to 12 players on the sidelines in the last fortnight but the tremendous team sprit has seen the club go unbeaten in seven matches and are still yet to taste defeat on the road.
Prior to the game with the Sky Blues which Barnsley won 2-0, Hill attempted to sign Manchester City’s 20 year old wonderkid Gai Assulin who rose to prominence with Barcelona’s B team before being snatched by City, and Rochdale’s 22 year old midfielder Joe Thompson who came through the ranks at Spotland and was a regular starter when Hill was in charge there but has struggled to nail down a place under Hill’s replacement Steve Eyre.
But with the two week international break enabling the current squad to recuperate Hill told the Sheffield Star that there is no need for additions now.
“There was a small window of opportunity to sign both of those players, but that’s passed now. We’ve had a lot of injuries and I wanted to get them both but both the deals are dead in the water now. We won’t be going there again.
“We’re starting to get back players from injury, which is great, so hopefully I’ll have a few more to pick from before next Saturday.”
