Reds boss Keith Hill is believed to be chasing highly-rated Manchester United midfielder Oliver Norwood.
The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international spent time on loan with Scunthorpe United and Coventry, where he impressed in 17 appearances, scoring twice.
He has earned 5 caps for his country.
Hill is thought to be a big admirer of the player and Reds fans will be hoping he can fill the void left when Danny Drinkwater left for Leicester City.
Meanwhile, the Sheffield Star has revealed that outgoing striker Andy Gray could resign for the Reds if he fails to find a new club in the close season.
The 34-year-old is out of contract and has not been retained but could rejoin the club on reduced terms if no-one signs him this summer.
Also, defender Lee Collins will complete a permanent move to Barnsley today. The Reds have paid £50,000 to cash-strapped Port Vale to bring the 23-year-old to the club.
He made seven appearances after moving to Oakwell on a loan deal in March.
