Barnsley have claimed a major victory over the sale of former captain Jacob Butterfield to Norwich City after the Canaries agreed to pay £1.3m for the 22 year old.
It represents a major success for Keith Hill and the club as Butterfield’s contract had expired and the fee- eligible as the former Manchester United trainee is under 24- was set to be decided by a tribunal, which would likely have seen the club net a substantially lesser fee.
A statement on the club’s official website read:
“Barnsley Football Club have reached an agreement with Norwich City for the transfer fee of Jacob Butterfield.
The club are now happy to have accepted a vastly improved offer from Norwich, subsequently avoiding a tribunal as the midfielder is under the age of 24.”
Meanwhile only one of Hill’s summer recruits has been handed a single digit squad number for the 2012-2013 season. Defender Lee Collins, who finished last season on loan at Oakwell will wear Number 5 but the manager’s other four signings to date are further down the order. Goalkeeper Ben Alnwick will don the number 12 shirt Striker Mido will wear number 18, Jacob Mellis has 21 and Kelvin Etuhu has 23.
