Barnsley’s game at Charlton this afternoon has sensationally been called OFF after the pitch failed an inspection just TWO hours before kick-off.

Charlton had stated all week that the game would definitely go ahead after their proposed FA Cup tie with Oxford was twice postponed, firstly last Saturday and then on Wednesday and even issued a statement on Thursday which stated “Following work to alleviate concerns regarding the Valley's playing surface, no issues are expected ahead of Saturday’s clash with Barnsley.”

But when today’s referee Iain Williamson arrived at the stadium he ordered an inspection at 1pm, which the pitch subsequently failed and the match has been postponed.

The decision is likely to cause anger amongst many Barnsley supporters who will have travelled for nearly four hours to make the game.

Reds winger Jim O’Brien tweeted:

They not think of people travelling? Could have been done at 8oclock this morning.
