Barnsley have today decided to part company with assistant manager Micky Mellon and goalkeeping coach Ian Willcock.
Mellon was brought to the club in January of last year to assist the then caretaker boss David Flitcroft whilst Willcock has been at the club nearly three years.
Since the arrival of Danny Wilson as manager in December it has appeared that former Fleetwood manager Mellon had become marginalized and with the season entering its most crucial stage Wilson has told the board he wants a change and to maybe bring in his own staff.
The rumour mill has suggested that Wilson could opt to bring in some of his former players from his golden era at Oakwell back in 1996-1997. Nicky Eaden, currently Under 21 coach at Leicester, former captain Neil Redfearn who is now a youth coach at Leeds and even Barnsley born Chris Morgan whose relationship with the fans has soured following the infamous clash with Iain Hume, have all been mooted to be candidates.
A statement from the club today simply read:
“Barnsley Football Club has today terminated the employment of Assistant Manager Micky Mellon and Goalkeeping Coach Ian Willcock with immediate effect.
The Club would like to place on record its thanks to both Micky and Ian for their service and wish them all the best for the future.”
Mellon, 42, had a four game caretaker spell in charge at Oakwell following Flitcroft’s sacking and led Barnsley to their only away win so far this season, 2-1 at Brighton back in December.
