Barnsley have been dealt a massive blow in the January transfer window after Sam Morsy rejected the chance to move to Oakwell on a permanent basis and instead has signed a new contract at Wigan until 2019.
When Egypt international Morsy joined the Reds on loan at the end of August there was a deal in place to make the move permanent in January if both sides agreed. As Wigan struggled following promotion however they recalled Morsy early at the start of this month but Barnsley immediately activated the clause by bidding the agreed fee.
After declaring how much he had enjoyed his time at Oakwell it seemed just a matter of time before Morsy would sign on the dotted line in South Yorkshire, but after excelling in two matches for Wigan he was offered a new deal with the Latics and has now decided to stay.
He told Wigan’s official website:
"I am delighted to commit my future to Wigan Athletic.
"If I am being honest, six months ago I didn’t think I would ever play for the club again. I had a great time at Barnsley but, as soon as I came back earlier this month, the manager here outlined straight away what he wants, his vision for the club and that’s something I want to be a part of.
"The manager here has been great with me and really pushed for this and I do believe there could be some really exciting times ahead for the club.
"The ultimate aim this season is to survive in the Sky Bet Championship, I think we can do that and then kick on in the future.”
