Interesting Stats:
This the first meeting at the John Smith’s Stadium for seven years, on what was a memorable night for Barnsley.
It was the League One Play-Off Semi-Finals and The Reds were trailing 1-0 after a home leg defeat. Second half goals from Paul Hayes, Paul Reid and Daniel Nardiello saw The Reds win 3-1 however, and 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the Final where they defeated Swansea on penalties to win promotion to the Championship.
Bearing this in mind, Huddersfield will now be looking for revenge and it would be rather ironic if it was the Terriers who now relegate Barnsley back to English football’s third tier.
That defeat in May 2006, is the only one Huddersfield have suffered in their last five meetings with Barnsley and they are looking to secure their first double over their Yorkshire neighbours in 10 years after a 1-0 win at Oakwell back in November. The Terriers were under the management of Simon Grayson then but it is ex Reds boss Mark Robins who is now looking to guide them to safety.
This is not a fixture that usually generates goals; three of the last four meetings have finished 1-0 with The Reds Play-Off victory the only exception.
Good omen for The Reds, they have won two of their last three fixtures at Huddersfield, BUT
have managed only six in total from 30 trips.
Huddersfield have lost two of their last three final day matches but have managed to hit form at just the right time. When Robins took over on Valentines Day, the Terriers lost seven of his first 11 games in charge but have won three of the last four.
They require just a point to ensure they play back-to-back Championship seasons for the first time in 12 years. Huddersfield will only go down if they lose to Barnsley and Peterborough, Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday all win.
The main reason the Terriers are not all but safe is due to their goal difference of –20. Only already relegated Bristol City have a worse GD.
The Terriers have let in 71 goals so far this campaign- only Peterborough (72) and Bristol City (80) have conceded more. Coupled with the fact they have scored only 51 times- the lowest amount in the Championship, shows why they are not yet safe.
Barnsley should go to West Yorkshire with hope as Huddersfield have won just seven times in front of their own supporters this season- the division’s joint lowest,, although they have been beaten just six times at home- the joint best record in the bottom half of the table.
They have also only conceded 24 goals at home, the best tally amongst the bottom seven sides.
Over the past seven weeks, Barnsley have faced all the other seven teams who occupy the division’s top eight places, and have lost just one, but have picked up just 12 points from a possible 39 against the sides currently sat in the bottom eight.
The Reds have kept clean sheets in each of their last two games. It is a massive five and a half years since they last managed three successive shut outs. Overall Barnsley kept four clean sheets in April.
Barnsley are unbeaten on the final day of the season for five years. Cardiff’s 3-0 victory over The Reds on the last day in 2008 is the last time they suffered defeat.
In this incredible Championship season Barnsley, in third bottom, have 54 points, which will NOT be enough for survival. It means this season a team will be relegated from the second tier of English football with the highest points total EVER. The previous highest was 52 which Leicester went down with in 2007-2008.
If Barnsley had accrued 54 points last season they would have finished 18th, FOURTEEN points clear of the relegation zone. Peterborough currently have four points MORE than they managed in the whole of 2011-2012 but will go down tomorrow if Barnsley better their result.
In the last 24 years only four sides have stayed up in English football’s second tier after being bottom on New Year’s Eve.
Since then though only Watford (37) have picked up more points than Barnsley’s 33.
Tomorrow they meet their former manager, Mark Robins. The 43 year old ex Manchester United striker led Barnsley to their highest point tally at this level since the 1999-2000 season, when, in 2010-2011 he guided them to 54 points. Victory tomorrow would see The Reds eclipse that.
They go in search of their 15th league win of the season, a total they have reached only once before since returning to the Championship, and that was in the first season- 2006-2007. That year though they also lost 26 times. At the moment they stand on 19, five less than last season and their joint second best total in six years.
The Reds have bagged 54 goals so far in 2012-2013, and despite being the second lowest home scorers in the division, this is their second best tally at this level since 2002. If they score twice on Saturday they will eclipse their highest of 55 which they achieved in 2010-2011.
Unfortunately this has been a particularly leaky season at the back. The Reds have conceded 68 goals with one game still to play. Only last season (74) and in 2006-2007 (85) have they conceded more since promotion.
Barnsley have failed to win any of their last seven league and cup games on the road, drawing each of the last three.
Victory tomorrow would give them their sixth league victory away from Oakwell, their joint best tally since returning to the Championship.
A goal will be their 55th on the road this season, again equalling their best tally since promotion seven years ago.
