Npower Championship Matchday Seventeen: Bolton Wanderers v Barnsley

Last updated : 16 November 2012 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Team News:

Marcus Tudgay is set to make his Barnsley debut after arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest and he could be joined by the club’s top scorer Craig Davies who is fit again after missing the last five matches with a hamstring injury. His last game was the 1-0 victory at Charlton in October, the last time The Reds won.

Mido is also set to continue his rehabilitation from a hamstring tear. The 29-year-old Egyptian made his Reds debut as a substitute in the 1-0 home defeat to Huddersfield last weekend and is again expected to be in the squad.

David Perkins remains sidelined with his own hamstring problem.

Interesting Stats:

These two sides- who were both promoted to the Premier League together in 1997, have been inseparable over the years, with both sides winning 12 meetings, and drawing 11. They have both won nine home meetings and three away meetings with the only difference being that Bolton have managed six draws at Oakwell, compared to Barnsley’s five at Bolton.

Barnsley have though won only three of 17 trips to Bolton, and they have never won at the Reebok Stadium, drawing three and losing one of their four visits there.

This will be the first meeting between the two sides in over 11 years. 2000-2001 was the last time they were both in the same division, and Bolton did the double over The Reds, winning 2-0 at the Reebok and 1-0 at Oakwell. They were promoted to the Premier League via the Division One Play-Offs that May, where they had remained until their relegation this spring.

Bolton are unbeaten in their last six meetings with Barnsley, home and away, four of them being draws, and their last league defeat was in the Premier League season of 1997-1998 when The Reds won 2-1 at Oakwell.

Bolton are likely to give a debut to former Barnsley captain Jacob Butterfield tomorrow, are now under the guidance of Dougie Freedman, after the sacking of Owen Coyle and the former Crystal Palace boss has lost just one of his five matches in charge, albeit he has drawn four of them. Indeed the Trotters have won just two of their last nine Championship matches, to leave the pre-season promotion favourites languishing in 16th position, seven points off the top six.

Defeat for Barnsley tomorrow would be their fifth in a row. They have not lost five in a row since August/September 2009. The fourth defeat cost Simon Davey his job as manager.
