Team News:
Garry O’Connor comes straight into the squad, and probably the starting line-up after returning on loan from Birmingham City. The 27 year old will replace Paul Hayes who cannot play against his parent club. This also means Iain Hume will not face The Reds. Matt Hill has returned to Wolves for treatment on his foot injury but according to manager Mark Robins will travel to Deepdale in a non playing capacity. Robins will also have to decide whether to start with Chris Wood, or Andy Gray who came on with just half an hour gone.
Likely Lineup:
Luke Steele
Luke Potter
Jason Shackell
Stephen Foster
Bobby Hassell
Adam Hammill
Nathan Doyle
Hugo Colace
Jim O’Brien
Garry O’Connor
Andy Gray
Head To Head:
Arguably Barnsley’s best result and performance on the road last season came at Deepdale when The Reds hit four past the Lilywhites. Goals from Anderson, a Michael Hart own goal, Andy Gray and a last minute strike from debutant Jay Rodriquez saw the Reds hit four on the road for the first time in exactly eight years to the day. The match at Deepdale was originally scheduled for Boxing Day but due to the terrible snowy conditions that engulfed the country over Christmas and New Year it was postponed until the 2nd February.

The stunning success was The Reds second win in their last three trips to Preston as they also secured a 2-1 success in the 2007-2008 season. In April of that campaign a stunning free kick from Diego Leon put the Reds in front before Jon Macken who scored 63 goals in 183 games for the Lilywhites scored a penalty. Stephen Foster put through his own net to ensure a nervy final 20 minutes.

It has not been all plain sailing at Deepdale however. The Reds suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in 2008-2009. Richard Chaplow had put Preston in front before Jamal Campbell-Ryce struck an equaliser. It looked like being enough to gain The Reds a point but with just two minutes remaining Sean St Ledger saw his wayward effort deflect into the back of the net to leave Barnsley empty handed.

It was another narrow defeat in the Reds first season back in the Championship. The TV cameras were at Deepdale to see goalkeeper Nick Colgan sent off for handball just eight minutes in. On loan Arsenal stopper Vito Mannone came on for his debut and showed signs of what was to come when he punched a cross against the head of Patrick Agyemang on the half hour to secure the game for Preston.

Last season’s thumping at Deepdale was revenge for the beating Preston gave to The Reds when they had come to Oakwell in the August. At that point The Reds had won one and lost one of their opening two games but were soundly beaten 3-0 in an abject performance. Paul Parry, Neil Mellor and ex Reds youngster Jon Parkin grabbed the goals in a comfortable win.

Preston also took the points from Oakwell in 2006-2007. In a game of very few chances, Liam Chilvers grabbed the game’s only goal with 55 minutes gone.

Indeed Barnsley’s only home win over Preston since 2002 arrived in incredible circumstances in 2007-2008. Istvan Ferenczi had put The Reds in front just before half time and it looked like being enough until deep into injury time referee Clive Oliver penalised Rob Kozluk for shirt pulling in the area. It was left to Mellor to level the game but Heinz Muller pulled off a stunning top corner penalty save to give Barnsley all three points.
Teams:
Barnsley: Muller, Foster, Nyatanga, Guedes, Kozluk, Campbell-Ryce, Togwell, Howard, Devaney(McCann, 89 ) , Ferenczi (Mostto, 88 ) , Macken (Odejayi, 80 )

This Season:
Preston have had a season of struggle so far under Darren Ferguson. The Lilywhites ended 2009-2010 with just one win and ten and that wretched run continued into the new campaign, losing six of their first eight matches. They ended that with a stunning 6-4 win at Leeds but have won just one of the six matches since and are sat just outside the relegation zone on goals scored. Their strike force has a Barnsley feel about it. Jon Parkin started his career at Oakwell, as a defender, but made just 10 appearances in four years before departing in 2002, whilst alongside him is Iain Hume who is currently on loan at Deepdale from Barnsley. Hume scored The Lilywhites goal in their 1-1 draw at Bristol City last weekend but is unavailable to play due to the loan stipulations. Preston also have the worse defensive record in the Championship this season and are without a clean sheet in 12 games.
Barnsley have dropped from seventh in the Championship to 18th on the back of a shocking run of one win in nine. Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Leicester also means they have scored just once in the last four outings. The Reds are also on an appalling run away from home and have now gone 14 matches since they last won on the road. Only Burnley and Middlesbrough are also yet to win away in the Championship.
