Npower Championship Matchday Twelve: Burnley v Barnsley

Last updated : 18 October 2010 By Rob Miles (Barnsley Boy)

Team News:

Only Jeronimo Neumann who missed Saturday’s victory over Nottingham Forest is unavailable for The Reds so manager Mark Robins is likely to stick with the same eleven that started that 3-1 success on Saturday. Jacob Butterfield is pushing to start after scoring his first ever goal in front of his own fans but will most likely be a substitute.

Likely Lineup:

Luke Steele

Jay McEveley

Jason Shackell

Stephen Foster

 Kieran Trippier

 Adam Hammill

 Hugo Colace

 Nathan Doyle

 Jim O’Brien

 Goran Lovre

 Andy Gray

 Head To Head:

Barnsley head to Turf Moor looking for their second victory there in the last five visits and only their sixth in 19 trips altogether. One good omen for The Reds is they did triumph at Burnley when they last met, winning 2-1 on Boxing Day 2008. Jamie Cureton and a Chris McCann own goal continued The Reds impressive Boxing Day record. Boxing Day is in fact a traditional time for Barnsley and Burnley to meet each other due to the clubs close proximity- just 45 miles apart and indeed they will meet at Oakwell on this festive day again this year, as they have in 2006 and 2000, with Barnsley winning 1-0 on both occasions. A Martin Devaney goal was enough to secure the spoils four years ago and a 90th minute effort from Chris Morgan did the damage at the start of the century.

The Reds have in fact won their last three meetings with the Clarets. They managed the double over them in 2008-2009 with the Boxing Day triumph following on from a 3-2 home success three months previous. Jon Macken, Simon Whaley and Diego Leon had given The Reds a commanding 3-0 lead in front of the SKY cameras but they nearly threw it away when they allowed Martin Paterson to score twice in five minutes.

It was 3-2 again at Oakwell when the sides met in the third round of the Carling Cup last season.

Then Premier League side Burnley and The Reds fought out a real see-saw encounter. Steven Fletcher put the Clarets 1-0 up on 21 minutes only for Jon Macken to equalise a minute later, before a stunning effort from Anderson De Silva put The Reds in front right on half time. Chris Eagles restored parity seven minutes into the second half, but Hugo Colace sent The Reds into a fourth round tie with Manchester United with the winner 15 minutes from time.

Whilst Barnsley are unbeaten in their last 14 Oakwell meetings with Burnley dating back to 1932, their record at Turf Moor isn’t so great. As mentioned before they did triumph there on the last visit but that was the first at the old ground since 1994.

In 2007-2008, The Reds suffered a narrow 2-1 loss, a week before the FA Cup Semi-Finals. Wade Elliott and Kyle Lafferty put the Clarets 2-0 up before Brian Howard pulled one back before half time. It meant the following weekend, with The Reds not in league action due to their date at Wembley, they dropped into the bottom three.

The two trips preceding this saw The Reds take a couple of hammerings. In their first season back in the Championship in 2006-2007 Barnsley threw away a 2-0 lead given to them by Michael McIndoe to lose 4-2. Jon Harley pulled one back before the break and Gifton Noel-Williams helped himself to a second half hat-trick.

The previous season- the club’s promotion campaign of 2005-2006, it was Burnley who ended The Reds League Cup campaign in the Second Round. The Reds had defeated Burnley’s Lancashire rivals Preston away on penalties in the previous round but there was to be no more higher division “giant killing” as the Clarets breezed to a 3-0 victory courtesy of goals from Keith Lowe, Ade Akinbiyi and Jon Spicer.

Aside from the Boxing Day trip in 2008, the last time The Reds emerged with anything from Turf Moor was also another goal laden thriller in October 2001. The two sides shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw which had a cracking climax. A Chris Morgan own goal had put the Clarets in front before Lee Briscoe doubled the advantage just after the half hour mark. Chris Lumsdon reduced the arrears with a penalty on the stroke of half-time and Morgan atoned for his earlier error but putting through the right net on 52 minutes. Ex Reds striking star Andy Payton looked to have won it for Burnley when the man who hit 41 goals in 108 appearances for the Reds between 1993 and 1996 slotted home a spot kick with four minutes remaining. Incredibly though Darren Barnard struck in the 88th minute. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to lift Barnsley out of the Division One relegation zone.

Interestingly there hasn’t been a goal-less draw between these two sides for 75 years.

This Season:

Notwithstanding Barnsley’s poor record at Turf Moor, The Reds will also have a tough task tomorrow night as Burnley are currently unbeaten at home this season- winning four and drawing one. They have only let in three goals on their own patch- a record bettered only by Swansea, Hull and QPR. The Clarets are also unbeaten in their last six games overall as they look to immediately bounce back into the Premier League and they sit eighth in the Championship table. Their dozen run of games without defeat includes just one league win, a 4-0 thumping of Hull in their last home match, but it really should be two wins after a breathtaking game at Sheffield United at the weekend. Brian Laws side led 2-0 before United fought back- ex red Daniel Bogdanovic grabbed his first Blades goal, but Laws’ men looked have snatched the points when ex Barnsley loanee Jay Rodriguez scored in the 90th minute. Incredibly though United’s Mark Yeates struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time to grab the Blades a much needed point. Burnley have also not conceded at Turf Moor since an epic game with Preston back in September. The Clarets were 3-1 down going into the final six minutes, but a brace from Chris Iwelumo and that man Rodriguez again in the 90th minute secured a stunning 4-3 success. Ironically Rodriguez’s only Barnsley goal arrived in the 90th minute, and like for Burnley it was the fourth goal in a win over Preston.

Barnsley continued their impressive home form with a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Goals from Nathan Doyle, Andy Gray and Jacob Butterfield gave The Reds their fourth win from six home games. It is a different story on the road however. The Reds now have not won on their travels for 12 matches since a 2-0 success at Cardiff in February. They have also only managed four goals away from Oakwell in their five matches this season, and three of those came in the same game- a 3-3 draw at Bristol City. Some consolation is that The Reds gained their first away clean sheet since April in their last outing when they drew 0-0 at Scunthorpe.
