There will be no Johnstones Paint Trophy glory for Barnsley after they were defeated on penalties at Oldham last night.
The Reds had fought back from 2-0 down to draw the match with Sam Winnall’s injury time effort taking the tie to a shootout. It was the first time Barnsley have come from 2-0 to salvage a game since the opening match of the 2009-2010 season when just like last night they were 2-0 down at half time (at Sheffield Wednesday)
Sam Winnall’s extraordinary 35-yard effort, which took the game to penalties, arrived in the 90th minute. The last time they netted a final minute goal came just four weeks ago when Devante Cole grabbed Barnsley’s third consolation in the 5-3 defeat to MK Dons. The last time they scored in the final minute, which was not to no avail, however was back on the 9th April last year when Stephen Foster’s 96th minute effort rescued a point at Cardiff.
After Winnall’s effort most Reds supporters probably expected their side to go on and win as they have a good record in penalty shootouts. The Reds had won each of their last five shootouts before Winnall’s and Kane Hemmings’ misses last night. A 5-3 defeat to Grimsby in the League Cup in 1992 after both legs had finished 1-1 was the last time Barnsley had lost a shootout.
Remarkably, including last night, four of Barnsley’s last five penalty shootouts have come after 2-2 draws.
This was also their second ever Football League Trophy shootout. The Reds defeated Notts County 4-2 after a goal-less draw in 2003.
If you discount the shootout, Barnsley have now lost just one of their first seven away matches, their best start to a campaign on the road since they lost one of their first nine away games of the 1996-1997 promotion season.
Barnsley have now scored a first half goal just once in the last seven games in all competitions.
The Reds once again failed to back up a win with another. They last managed back-to-back victories in March.
Oldham’s Danny Philliskirk now has seven goals in his last six Johnstones Paint Trophy appearances.
The Latics are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions, five of which have been draws.
