Sunday 9th May 1999
Swindon 1-3 Barnsley
Griffin 9
Jones 9
Bullock 28
Dyer 75
Interesting to note:
After the euphoria of the Premier League, Barnsley’s return to the Football League did not go as everybody would have hoped with this final day win at Swindon leaving them in 13th position after winning 14 but losing 15 games during the season. Eric Winstanley was in caretaker charge for this game as John Hendrie’s legendary three seasons with the club had ended in April and Dave Bassett was to take the reigns at Oakwell in the summer. It was the final game for Dutch defender Arjan De Zeeuw. The bedrock of Barnsley’s defence in the promotion and Premier League campaigns had joined the club in 1995 but left on a free transfer to Wigan.
Despite the lowly finish, De Zeeuw was the only player who started this game that did not also feature in the first match-day squad of 1999-2000 with six of those starting.
Barnsley XI: Tony Bullock, Nicky Eaden, Darren Barnard, Scott Jones, Arjan De Zeeuw, Kevin Richardson, Martin Bullock, Matty Appleby, Eric Tinkler, Bruce Dyer.
Subs: Darren Sheridan (for Tinkler 67)
Subs not used: Clayton Blackmore, Michael Turner.
Goals: Scott Jones 9, Martin Bullock 28, Bruce Dyer 75.
Attendance: 8,182.
