Three players who played key roles in Barnsley’s highest league finish for 17 years have been called up to the latest Wales squad for their upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Serbia.
21-year-old fullback Gethin Jones who made 17 appearances for The Reds on loan from Everton in the second half of the campaign earns his first call-up by manager Chris Coleman, as does 26-year-old winger cum striker Marley Watkins. Watkins has been one of the key performers in the Reds rise from the bottom of League One in the past 17 months, making 87 appearances in total and scoring 18 goals, however he has played his last game for the club, rejecting a new deal this month and he is now set to join Championship rivals Norwich City in the next few days.
One player called up who looks to be staying at Oakwell is striker Tom Bradshaw. The 24 year old who netted eight times in 45 appearances in 2016-2017 in his first taste of second tier football following a move from Walsall won his first cap back in March as a substitute in a `1-0 friendly lost in Ukraine and will compete with Hal Robson-Kanu, Sam Vokes, Ben Woodburn and Tom Lawrence (who scored at Oakwell for Ipswich in March) for a starting berth.
