Sky Sports is reporting that the Reds have entered the chase to sign out-of-contract Blackpool defender Kirk Broadfoot.

The 28-year-old Scottish international has not agreed a new deal with the Seasiders and a number of Championship clubs, including the Reds, are believed to be tracking him.

He began his career north of the border with St Mirren where he racked up 154 appearances before moving to Scottish giants Rangers in 2007. He spent five years with the Ibrox side before moving to Blackpool in the summer of 2012.

Meanwhile at Oakwell, the Reds have signed young midfielder Wade Joyce on a free transfer. The 18-year-old graduated through Bury's academy before joining Sunderland in 2012.

He has signed a six month deal at Oakwell and will spend that time playing for Paul Heckingbottom's development side. He told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:

“I’m buzzing to be here and just pleased to be given a chance. I want to impress and maybe get a longer deal.

“I like to think I’m a hardworking player. I like to get up and down the pitch and I won’t shirk a challenge. I’m going to give it my all whilst here and then we’ll see what happens.”

The Reds are also believed to be interested in Coventry City full-back Cyrus Christie. The 20-year-old has made 68 appearances for the Sky Blues since his emergence on the scene at the age of just 17.
