Reds Round-Up

Barnsley yesterday secured the double loan signing of Manchester United midfield pair Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell on six-month deals.

20-year-old Pearson is a familiar face at Oakwell, having made 22 appearances in the second half of last season, scoring once against Port Vale.

His midfield partner in the Man United U-21 side, Rothwell, also 20, has followed him to Oakwell until January 3rd. He spent time on loan with then-Championship side Blackpool last season.

Reds boss Lee Johnson has also brought in former Swindon, Peterborough and Fleetwood Town striker David Ball on trial. The 25-year-old netted in yesterday's 4-3 win over Mansfield Town in Bobby Hassell's testimonial game.

Meanwhile, the Mason Holgate saga rumbles on. After it looked certain that he would join Aston Villa last week, it was revealed that he, along with midfielder Paul Digby, were training with Manchester United.

The 18-year-old, who operated mainly at full-back for the Reds last term and scored his first senior goal on the last day's 5-0 thrashing of Rochdale, is now reportedly set to join the Premier League giants.

However, reports also suggest Newcastle United are interested in hijacking the deal for Holgate. What is for certain, he will not be a Barnsley player come August 8th.

Finally, ex-Red John Stones has been subject of a £20million bid from Premier League champions Chelsea. He moved to Everton in 2013 as an 18-year-old for £2.2million after progressing through the Barnsley FC Academy.

Strong rumours suggest the Reds installed a sell-on clause in the deal that took Stones to Goodison Park in 2013 and with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hinting he will go back with an improved bid, the Reds could be set for a hefty windfall should Stones move south.
