Barnsley have this afternoon made the bizarre decision to sign 41 year old goalkeeper Mike Pollitt on a one month’s loan from Wigan.
The former Manchester United trainee started his career back in 1990, before Christian Dibble, Rhys Oates, Dale Jennings, Paul Digby, Jacob Mellis, Reuben Noble-Lazarus, John Cofie and Danny Rose were all even born!
Born in Bolton, Pollitt has turned out for 16 different clubs, including loans during his 23 year career but has played just one competitive game since the 16th February 2011.
Pollitt is no stranger to Yorkshire after making 269 appearances for Rotherham between 1998 and 2000 and between 2001 and 2005, whilst also playing 46 games for Chesterfield in 2000-2001.
This move increases the speculation over the future of Barnsley’s current number two goalkeeper Ben Alnwick. The 26 year old who has featured for 10 clubs in just nine years has not played for The Reds since last October and stated during the summer that if game time did not arrive he would look to move elsewhere.
