Barnsley have today confirmed they will apply to re-enter the Central Reserve League for the 2010-2011 season after the ill-fated development squad proved a failure.

Last summer former boss Simon Davey announced he was scrapping the club’s reserve side and introducing a development squad where the club’s youngsters and players returning from injury could play in specially created behind closed door games.

It has proved fruitless however and new boss Mark Robins has voiced his disapproval with not being able to give fringe players game time on numerous occasions this season. This has meant the club now intends to have a reserve side again from next season. The club’s official website reports:

BARNSLEY FC can today confirm that it is the Clubs intention to apply to re-join the Central League from the start of the 2010/2011 season.

The Reds withdrew from the reserve team competition last summer but will have second string matches again from the start of the next campaign should the application for re-admittance to the league be successful giving the Clubs youngsters and professionals more opportunity to play regular matches.

Meanwhile winger Emil Hallfredsson has been called up to the Iceland national team for their upcoming friendly against Cyprus on the 3rd March.

The 26 year old who has notched three goals in 22 appearances for The Reds this season since joining a on a season long loan from Reggina has 24 caps for his national side since making his debut in 2005 scoring once. Iceland also have friendlies against the Faroe Islands and Mexico towards the end of March but will not be at this summer’s World Cup as they finished bottom of their qualifying group with just five points.
