Rugby Union could be coming to Oakwell next season if Rotherham Titans win promotion to the Aviva Premiership.
The Titans currently sit fourth in the English Championship table and are almost certain to make the end of season playoffs as they look to gain entry to the top tier for the first time in 10 years.
However their current 2,500 capacity Clifton Lane ground does not meet Premiership standards and therefore they have been forced to seek other accommodation.
Barnsley and Mansfield both responded positively and due to Oakwell holding nearly 14,000 more seats than Mansfield’s Field Mill, Rotherham have opted to move the short journey across South Yorkshire, a deal which could land Barnsley around £250,000.
Chief Executive Ben Mansfield told the Chronicle:
"The Titans approached us and we feel that, commercially, it would make sense to have them as a tenant if they are playing in the Aviva Premiership. It is definitely going to happen if they go up."
The decision has been met with a mixed reaction amongst the Reds faithful however with many supporters worried about the impact rugby matches could have on the Oakwell pitch.
